Research in the Library: Second Grade The second grade team has been learning about the Sodus community as part of their social studies program. Small groups of students have been taking fieldtrips to various community institutions to see how they operate and what they do for people in Sodus. One group visited the VanDeWalle Fruit Farm, owned by a student's parents. They watched apples being washed, inspected, sorted, and packed for distribution. It was especially interesting to watch huge bins of apples being dunked into the tank for washing. Another highlight was the box making machine. Students even helped load some packaged apples onto a truck! Another group went to the Ontario Midland Railroad headquarters. Sandi Saracen, the manager, pointed out the historic features of the old station building. She took students into the shed to see a train engine. The students were amazed to learn that the railroad supplies many local businesses with the materials they need to make the products they sell. Some things come from as far away as California! They also met the station's resident cat, "Kitty." The third group visited The Market Place. Nathan Zecher gave them a tour of the grocery store, pointing out things that he knew young students would find especially interesting. They watched chicken being fried in the deli and peppers being weighed , shrink-wrapped, and priced in the produce cooler. He showed them how the store recycles cardboard by having a compactor. A butcher came out and showed the students a huge piece of meat, then pointed out what types of products are made from that particular meat. The huge ice cream cooler was a big hit! The latest group visited the Reliant Community Credit Union. They learned that people who do their banking at the credit union actually own part of it. On a tour, they were able to see what the tellers do - even taking a peek into their cash drawers. The teller at the drive-up window explained how she sent money out to people in the cars. The students were also able to step into the vault and see where the money is kept. They were surprised to learn that banks sometimes have to buy money from the govenment!
