OUR COMMUNITY

The Sodus Central School District is located in central western New York, on the south shore of Lake Ontario. It is farming community with apple, cherry and peach orchards plus an abundance of vegetable crops. Local residents derive income from farming, small businesses and employment at the school. However, residents also commute to Xerox, Kodak, Bausch and Lomb, and other major Rochester-based corporations. The school district covers 90 square miles and serves the villages of Sodus and Sodus Point, plus the unincorporated areas of Wallington, Sodus Center, South Sodus, Alton, and Joy.

The city of Rochester is just 45 minutes to the west of Sodus and Syracuse in one hour to the east. Shopping centers are plentiful in these metropolitan areas and in the nearby communities of Newark and Webster.

Rochester, as a cultural center, is home to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman School of Music, local and road production theaters, and seven museums.

The area provides an abundance of recreational opportunities. Lake Ontario offers swimming, sailing, boating and some of the world's best trout and salmon fishing. Downhill skiing, cross country skiing, ice boating, ice fishing and snowmobiling are among the winter sporting activities available.

Within an hour's drive are several colleges and universities. The University of Rochester, Syracuse University, Nazareth College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Roberts Wesleyan, SUNY at Brockport and Oswego, Monroe Community College, Finger Lakes Community College, and Hobart and William Smith offer local residents higher education opportunities.

THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

With limited industrial development, the agricultural and residential tax base has supported a comprehensive K-12 educational program that provides Sodus students with many of the advantages associated with large districts. The programs include Even Start, Pre-Kindergarten for 3 and 4 year olds, a Community Schools Program, a 21st Century Learning Center and congruence in regular remedial and handicapped instruction.

Sodus Central is proud of the innovative programs offered in specific curriculum areas such as Reading First, Individual Language Arts, Writing Process, Elementary Science Program (ESP), Interdisciplinary Teaching Teams 7-8, extensive computer programs, AP calculus, and college level electives in social studies, English and science.

Students receive enrichment through visiting artists, children's theater, summer school of the arts, foreign exchange programs, travel opportunities, and participation in all-county and all-state music programs. The district is proud of student success in all areas including scholarship and talent search winners, Empire State participants, oratorical and National Spelling Bee contests and Section V athletic championship.
